CONSERVATION MATTING, MOUNTING AND GLAZING
MATTING
The primary purpose of matting is to provide a transition between art
and frame and to keep the glazing from touching the art. Matting allows
air circulation between the glass and artwork which discourages the
accumulation of moisture and hence mold. Allison & Ross offers an
unlimited variety of conservation matting, consisting of 100% cotton
rag matting or mats buffered with calcium carbonate, to enhance and
preserve your artwork.
MOUNTING
Allison & Ross offers archival mounting, four-ply rag barrier and
acid-free backings. No acidic materials are used - no cardboard, chip
board, paper mats, brown craft paper, or regular tapes or glues.
GLAZING
Glazing has one job - to protect and preserve the entire art/mat
package. Light transmission, light reflection, and UV-blocking capacity
are the three basic properties of glazing. Many styles of glass and
plexi-glass are currently available, with recent industry standards and
advances providing a more complete protection for your artwork than has
ever been available. Because of these advances in technology, we
suggest checking the glazing on your artwork if it is more than ten
years old. This sort of maintenance will allow you to correct any
changes in the condition of your artwork or matting due to substandard
glazing before they cause irreversible damage. Allison & Ross offers the
following types of glazing with its corresponding scale of ultra-violet
protection:
CLEAR GLASS
46% U.V. blocking, not conservation, glare, blue/green tint,
Inexpensive.
REFLECTION CONTROL
53% U.V. blocking, single-sided etched to diffuse reflected light,
glass surface has a mat finish , inexpensive.
CONSERVATION CLEAR
97% U.V. blocking, yellow tint, essential for conservation framing,
very reasonable, mild cleaners required.
CONSERVATION REFLECTION CONTROL
97% U.V. blocking, etched surface on one side, other side UV coated,
distortion, slight glare, semi-expensive, mild cleaner required.
ANTI-RELECTIVE (AR) GLASS
70% U.V. blocking, not conservation, clear, color free, color
enhancing, no distortion, excellent clarity, very true color
transmission (97%) allowing more light to reach the art- work, making
it appear brighter and more vibrant. less than 1% reflection selective
glass cleaners
MUSEUM GLASS
97% U.V. blocking, Anti-reflective technology coupled with UV-blocking
properties produces an ultra protective nearly invisible lite of glass,
No special handling or glass cleaners needed, Museum glass is the
ultimate glazing option.
UV LAMINATED WATER WHITE DENGLAS
With the UV blocking
film laminated between two pieces of water white anti-reflective glass,
this safety glazing offers 99% UV blocking and 96% light transmission.
